Dr. Liu was a pioneering computer scientist who contributed not only to promoting the development of Taiwan’s technology industry, but also to educating the next generation. After receiving his Sc.D. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1962, he taught at MIT and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for over three decades, focusing on real-time systems, computer aided design, and discrete mathematics. Furthermore, having authored several books, Dr. Liu’s impact in education of the computer science field remains extensive.
Dr. Liu returned to Taiwan in 1998 to serve as President and Professor at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) until 2002. Beloved by both teachers and students, Dr. Liu dedicated his efforts to enhancing this university’s academic stature. He initiated the University System of Taiwan, combining research forces from NTHU with National Chiao Tung University, National Yang-ming University, and National Central University, and engaged in dedicated fundraising efforts to found the TSMC building for establishing the College of Technology Management.
Dr. Liu earned a sterling reputation, receiving numerous honors and awards for his contributions in both research and education. He was elected Fellow and received the Education Award from both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computer Machinery. He also received the Phil Kaufman Award in 2011, dubbed as the “Nobel Prize of the EDA Industry”. Dr. Liu was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 2000.
